Snow Day In Poplar Tree Estates

Poplar Tree Estates, Chantilly, VA

Footage Shot With A Panasonic HC-X1 4K Camera

During a random snowstorm in late March, I decided to go out into the Chantilly, Virginia community of Poplar Tree Estates and see what I could capture. I grew up in Poplar Tree and it had been a while since I went exploring the neighborhood, but I was basically snowed in with the family and decided to enjoy some of my favorite weather. (Yes, I love snow).

As you probably can imagine, video cameras and professional equipment are quite expensive. However, with some waterproof protection, I was able to take out the big camera, the Panasonic HC-X1 and capture some great 4K footage of the falling snow. It was my first time in harsh weather with this cam, but the camera held up well.

I walked over to Poplar Tree Elementary School. Up the Rocky Run Stream Valley Trail to the playground. Up to Stringfellow Road to watch cars spin out. And finally, across to Poplar Tree Park and the snow covered sports fields. It was calm, relaxing and quite beautiful. I took dozens of videos and put the best together in the video above.

CAMERA STUFF: I did not have access to a full sized camcorder rain cover, so instead I used a small DSLR cover that actually fit the camera quite nicely. However it was not meant for such a big rig, and made it difficult to shoot and adjust the settings without getting the camera a little wet. However, the camera held up for the 1-2 hours I was out and about, and didn't get too wet.

After about an hour or so I headed back home to drop off the camera and then embarked on a Fair Lakes restaurant and bar crawl for some lunch and to check out the snow day specials. You can follow my journey on Instagram.
