I was in Kensington taking some photos of a nearby home, so I decided to include a bunch of photos of the town of Kensington. The job took me down to the Antique Row area of town, and walking around the streets I stumbled into an interesting place called Frankly Pizza. I was about to head home, but after glancing inside, I saw the place was completely packed and a line was beginning to form. I had my camera in the car, and this looked like the perfect spot for my next DMV Adventure.
Frankly Pizza is an intimate spot. They have a great covered patio (with heat lamps) which is a cool spot to hang out and have some beer and a pizza. The inside is a lot more packed in, especially when the place is crowded, but I still had some space.
The wait was pretty long, and only getting longer. I had work to do, so I had no issues sitting on the bench by the door working on my lap top while I waited. It was about a 20 minute or so wait, but when 7pm hit, they were telling people over an HOUR at the door. This is how I knew this was the spot to be in Kensington.
I got to my seat and started off by ordering one of their $4 craft sodas, the Cherry Fizz. It was awesome. Unfortunately when you order things like this, there are rarely free refills. So whereas at a restaurant I might drink 5-6 cokes or iced teas, I only had one. I’d get it again.
Now, on to the pies! When I got there I walked over to the brick oven and watched the cooks heat up a few pies and I knew I was at the right place. The menu had several different types to choose from, and I went with the Meatball pizza. If a place makes their own meatballs, and they put it on a pizza, I’m in. (The other toppings looked fresh and delicious too by the way..should have added anchovies)
In the video above, the lighting and the colors made the pizza look a little off, but in real life it looked amazing. The meatballs were fantastic and the size of the overall pizza was pretty decent for being a personal pizza. Although the $16 price was a little steep. The crust was good and had that charred brick oven taste, just the way I like it. The big surprise was the sauce, which was a little sweeter than your traditional tomato sauce and I was digging it. I’m not a huge fan of tomato sauce, despite loving pizza.
Overall I had a great experience at Frankly Pizza and I’m glad I found it. The pizza was awesome, it is a shame that it is all the way out in Kensington. Next time I drive by though, I will most certainly be returning.
