In the clocktower shopping center in Herndon, Virginia (officially called the Village Center at Dulles), is a really neat non-chain restaurant called Stone Cove Kit Bar. They have a trendy adult crowd, a decent happy hour and wood-fired oven cooked food. I went down to grab their flatbread pizza while I was out with my photo company shooting a home for a realtor.
Stone Cove’s slogan is “recess for adults” and it is a really “adult” place, I’d call it casually upscale. Bros in fedoras (called Cheftenders) welcome you to the restaurant which is centered around the wood fire over, forming a large windy oval of bar around it. You sit side by side, so it is better for couples than a group, but there are a few table and outside they have a great patio with real tables.
The menu (which is also your placemat) features mostly items cooked in the wood fired oven, but they also have another type of cooking device (where the wings are cooked, I don’t know what it is called, but it isn’t a fryer). I’ll let the restaurant tell you what their menu offerings are:
We offer a variety of Appetapas, flatbreads, salads, handhelds, homemade soups, specialty cocktails, and a variety of entrées that will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.
I typically will order their pepperoni pizza flatbread or the wings. The appetizers are pricey and pretty small, but they all look amazing. The rest of the menu I haven’t really had the desire to try.
The thing that looked most intriguing to me was coming in on for Saturday happy hour on a nice day and sitting on the patio. Drinks aren’t very cheap, and they have some fancy cocktails, but at happy hour (2pm-6pm 7 days a week) they give a significant discount.
I definitely recommend checking out Stone Cove for happy hour. Eating at a non-chain restaurant with 1 location is always worth a try. I’ll keep you posted about Saturday happy hour.
