Day 0: Where Am I Now? Fire Toga & The Teaching Tests

Before I actually get started with the big 100 Days of Business experiment, I want to give an update on where i currently stand concerning my 2 big goals for the not so distant future. I’ve already gotten a jump start on each of my targets, and I’m excited to continue the process.

1. Start My Own Business

When I say I want to start my own business, my definition of “start” is deeper than the dictionary’s meaning. Instead of just having my company come into existence, I am talking about “getting it moving”; as in having full time clients and a steady income and things of that nature.

Technically, the business has been in existence for several years, running as a sole proprietorship. In this regard I worked as a contractor for a real estate company (before they hired me as an employee), ran the extremely popular Wiz Happy Hour, and created a highly successful YouTube brand.

This year, when I became a full time small business owner, I needed to make sure that in terms of legality, my company was independent from Chris Comerford the individual. And yes, it is official. The process is complete. I formed a legal entity through the State Corporation Commission (SCC), a Limited Liability Company. Fire Toga LLC is legit! I even filed all the additional paperwork with the IRS, Virginia and Fairfax County. (In future posts I’ll discuss how I did this and some of the challenges I faced).

Right now Fire Toga (I’ll do a separate blog post about the name later) is currently working with a number of clients including a non-profit and local real estate companies, with lots of exciting things on the horizon.

Hopefully, the new 100 Days of Business, will assist in making Fire Toga the goto for local companies in need of videos, photos and marketing services. (Check out the website for some of the services we provide.)

2. Become A High School Business Teacher

The state of Virginia is facing a time where they are having trouble finding teachers. Therefore, the government provides a program that allows “career-switchers” the opportunity to become a teacher without having to go back to college.

In order to get into the program (read more about it here), I have to pass 2 tests. First, I’ve already passed the Marketing specific test (the Praxis) required to teach business marketing classes with a way above average score (well I do have 2 degrees in it).

And second, I’ve taken but not received my score, for the general reading and writing test called the Virginia Communication and Literacy test (VCLA). I should be getting my score in the next 10 days.

Once the score comes in, I will be sending in my application and hopefully beginning the 2 year program of Saturday classes (1 per month) in August.

So while I started the year a little late, I’m happy with my progress. I’m excited to already have some great clients and to be on schedule with the teaching program. It is all a great foundation for the official start of the 100 Days of Business.
