Just F*****g Do It!
This expletive infused version of the famous Nike slogan is one of the strategies posed by entrepreneur Mark Suster. In his article What Makes an Entrepreneur? Four Letters: JFDI, Suster describes one of the problems plaguing many so called entrepreneurs; over-analysis. The solution is the final statement in this quote about what makes a real entrepreneur:
“Real entrepreneurs are contagious. They are filled with ideas and they get those ideas onto paper. That paper can be in the form of wireframes or in the form of a PowerPoint plan. Or worst case your ideas can be conveyed verbally. But they GET THINGS DONE.”
Basically, they JFDI.
So, have I personally been Effing Deeing I? At times, no. I feel that many times I get caught up in doing so much planning or designing or thinking or writing that I don’t actually DO IT. And the times when I actually realize that this analysis paralysis is happening, and I stop and take action, I’m typically happy with the results.
The current book I’m reading, The Lean Startup, does not fully agree with this strategy. Especially when it means just doing something to “see what happens” instead of thinking more in terms of scientific method.
However, the idea behind JFDI can combat wasting time, and for me, can be a way to motivate myself to get out of my own head and to just f***** do it!
