UNBOXING THE GOPRO HERO 7 BLACK
MY STORY & WHAT’S IN THE GO PRO HERO BOX
For years and years I’ve been watching amazing GoPro videos online, always longing for the day I’d be able to create similar style videos. However, when I looked at my life, it seemed like I was not doing anything very exciting. I don’t ski. I don’t snowboard. I don’t like white water rafting. I don’t do extreme sports. So the GoPro was never the place for my hard earned dollars.
When the Go Pro Hero 7 Black released in 2018, I watched dozens of videos about the camera. While my lifestyle hadn’t changed, it appeared the GoPro had changed. They added new stabilization technology, and many were calling the camera the gimbal killer. A previous “action cam” I had gave me nothing but horrible shaky footage, so Go Pro always scared me.
The other feature that rang out to me was the new hyperlapse function, a time lapse with motion that creates some amazing stable video right out of the camera. This was something I knew I could use for work in Real Estate, to show driving on major roads, or walking through neighborhoods…I got ready to make the $400 purchase.
But the thing that really put me over the edge was a video by famous YouTuber Casey Neistat. He is a vlogger that uses a pretty large and visible setup with his DSLR, tripod and mic. In this video however, he alluded to the fact that the Go Pro Hero 7 black could actually be great for vlogging. I bought the camera the next day.
While I write this blog, I’ve actually done over 30 video vlogs and 50+ hyperlapses…so stay tuned to this blog and the DMV Adventures Vlog on Youtube for that. But HERE, we need to start at the beginning…what comes inside the box.
As the video above shows, the Go Pro comes with the following items inside the box:
GoPro Hero 7 Black Camera
Hard Case
Mount attacher & screw
A discardable black tab (for display)
Curved Adhesive Mount
Flat Adhesive Mount
USB-C Charger (no plug, just the wire)
GoPro Setup Card
GoPro Stickers
AN SD CARD DOES NOT COME WITH THE CAMERA (But lots of retailers include one for free, so look for a deal! I got a free card at Best Buy)
The camera comes mounted to a display box, and needs to be removed. The instructions are demonstrated in the video.
To remove the mount, pop open the big gray rubber tab on the top of the mount. Then squeeze the back of the 2 tabs, like tongs, and slide forward to remove. This is 1 of the ways you will attach and detach the camera to different accessories later.
Next, the camera is in the hard case, so you can’t add the battery, the charger or the SD card. This part SUCKS. It is really hard to pop the top of the case, and there were a few times after using the camera I couldn’t even do it (wet hands, cold hands, tired fingers, etc).
Basically the top is like a beer growler, a swing top. You have to get your fingers under the tab (not your nails) and squeeze and pull like a madman until it pops open. This is impossible to say in words, so watch the video.
Once you have the camera you can pop open the side door to plug in the USB, or pop open the bottom door to insert the battery and SD card. While the battery can charge in the camera, I recommend the FIRST THING you buy is the dual battery charger and an extra battery (so you have 3 total batteries). Battery life stinks on these things.
So that’s it! That is what you get in the box and how to drill down and get to the camera itself. I’ll be adding content on how to do different things, and examples of Vlogs, but for now, enjoy your camera!
Please leave a comment if you bought the camera or if you have any questions about opening the box, removing the camera or popping off the case.
